2021 Scholarship Winners

Champion Energy is committed to the community and charities we support, as we work to power lives and power businesses. The Champion Scholars scholarship program was created to recognize those that feel the same way. We received thousands of applications from students in Texas.

Applications were evaluated based on academic performance, awards, volunteerism, and the response to this question: Being a champion is about more than winning or being number one. Sometimes being a champion is about giving back to the community, standing up for your beliefs, or supporting a cause you believe in. What makes you a champion in your school or in your community? We are very proud to recognize this year's scholarship winners:

$5,000 Champion Scholars Award

Michael is the recipient of the $5,000 Champion Scholars award. Michael attends Clear Lake High School.

In the height of the COVID-19 pandemic Michael spread joy to friends and strangers on their birthdays by playing his saxophone outside their homes. Michael safely entertained and connected with 40+ isolated people on their birthdays. In addition, Michael is a member of the DECA Business Club and has a NASA Independent Study Mentorship.

Michael will be studying Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University.

Champion Quote:

“Going the extra mile to help others is a quality of a champion that resonates deeply with me. As I spread joy by performing free (socially distant) birthday streetside saxophone serenades, I became a champion in my community by providing a bright light during dark COVID-19 times. Each time that I saw the joy that my music would bring, I was inspired to keep on playing and create more smiles.”

Champion Quote:

“Through music, I had made a connection with them. I believe giving back to others and making a connection with people is key to being a champion in the community. While I would like to think I am a champion for volunteering, I believe I am the one who benefits the most because nothing brings me more happiness than serving others.”

$2,000 Champion Scholars Award

Grace is the recipient of the $2,000 Champion Scholars award. She attends Veritas Classical Academy.

During the personal protective equipment shortage in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Grace sewed over 50 face masks and distributed them to frontline health care workers and soup kitchen volunteers. Prior to the pandemic, she helped provide recovery assistance to individuals displaced as a result of both Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Imelda.

Grace will attend Baylor University where she plans to study Health Science Studies then go to medical school to study pediatric rheumatology.

Champion Quote:

“Delivering meals in the hot Southeast Texas sun, investing over one hundred hours in COVID relief efforts, and preparing for a career of serving children with autoimmune diseases affirms my belief that being a champion starts with a choice. Hard times create opportunities to face fears and to be a champion in service to others.”
